SWARTHMORE, PA -
Gracie Merrick scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift #10 Rowan to a 3-2 win over #21 Swarthmore in field hockey action, giving the Profs (1-1) their first victory of the year.
Alexa Ronning intercepted and fed it to freshman
Jenna Gray, who pushed it ahead to Merrick on the right side. The sophomore then put it into the far side of the cage for her first goal as a Prof, just 1:46 into overtime.
The goal ended Swarthmore's comeback bid as the home team had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force the extra period.
Rowan junior
Tess Herman opened the scoring at 9:07 of the first quarter, with her first goal of the season. Gray then notched her third goal in two games, taking a pass from
Allie Palumbo, to give the Profs a 2-0 lead at 22:58.
Rowan held the lead until the third quarter when Swarthmore (0-2) was awarded a penalty stroke, and Hayley Harris converted it. The Garnet continued to apply pressure and tied the game with a goal six minutes later at 40:30.
The Profs'
Mariah Juiliano made a season-high 13 saves in the contest, including a few key ones in the final quarter as Swarthmore was threatening to finish its comeback.
Rowan heads on the road on Saturday to meet second-ranked Johns Hopkins.
