#15 Softball Moves on in NJAC Tournament, Takes Down Kean, 7-0

2024 NJAC Tournament

GLASSBORO, NJ -- #15 Rowan moved on in the NJAC Tournament with a 7-0 victory over Kean Tuesday afternoon. The win puts the Profs in the championship series, needing one win to claim the conference title.

Fresh off Monday's 20-inning marathon victory, Rowan used a big five-run sixth inning and rode arm of starter Rylee Lutz to advance where they'll play the winner of Kean and Ramapo in the final. Both games take place here in Glassboro on Friday with the elimination game at 11 a.m. followed by the winner and Rowan at 1 p.m. The 'if necessary' game would take place on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Lutz struck out four while yielding five hits and no walks as the junior spun her 11th shutout on the season and improved her record to 14-6.

Payton MacNair and Cat Thomas helped spark the offense as both players were 2-for-4 with 2 RBI apiece. Zara MacNair was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.

Scoreless after three innings, the Profs, who were designated as the visitors for this game, broke through in the fourth as MacNair singled home Liz McCaffery for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, the Cougars threatened with runners on the corners and just one out, but Lutz induced a fielder's choice out at second and a pop up to short send it to the fifth.

Thomas made it 2-0 with a big two-out RBI double in that frame, plating Zara MacNair. Rowan then broke it open in the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits and two Kean errors. Kate Evick, Thomas, and MacNair all added RBI singles as part of the frame.

Ramapo advanced to the weekend portion of the tournament with its 5-0 win over defending champ TCNJ in an elimination game on Tuesday.
