GLASSBORO, NJ -- NCAA and team records were set as #15 Rowan outlasted TCNJ, 1-0, thanks to a
Liz McCaffery RBI single in the bottom of the 20th inning in an NJAC Tournament contest on Monday afternoon.
The win moves the Profs to a matchup against Kean here in Glassboro tomorrow starting at 4 p.m. as the tournament continues here at home.
TOURNAMENT HOMEPAGE
Starter
Emily McCutcheon grinded through all 20 innings as the sophomore set an NCAA Division III record for most innings pitched in a game. McCutcheon scattered 11 hits with six strikeouts and five walks while throwing 230 pitches in the four-hour plus marathon. The contest was just one inning shy of tying the longest game in Division III (21 innings).
As for team records, the Profs, who are the top seed in the tournament, had its longest game in program history as well as McCutcheon's innings thrown. The team also had 61 at-bats, which came in the former longest game, a 14-inning affair at MIT on May 13th, 2019 in an NCAA Tournament contest (55).
McCaffery finished the day tying a career-high with four hits as her single up the middle plated
Abigail Pawlowski from second for the winning run. Pawlowski and
Cat Thomas each walked three times, both personal bests.
Morgan Tripodi and
McKenzie Melvin had the other hits for Rowan.
TCNJ's Maya Knasiak entered the circle in relief in the sixth and spun the next 14 innings, allowing the one run on four hits with nine K's and eight walks on 226 pitches.
The Profs had two hits through the first seven innings, but McCutcheon allowed just three in the same time frame to keep things scoreless.
The fifth-seeded Lions would load the bases in both the eighth and 12th innings but failed to score. In the top of the 14th with runners on the corners and no outs, TCNJ's attempted suicide squeeze was snuffed out thanks to McCutcheon relaying the bunt to catcher
Kaitlyn Riggs for the tag at the plate. Rowan then got out of that jam as a liner to left was snared by Pawlowski who was able to fire back to second to McCaffery for the double play.
McCutcheon had a hand in another key double play in the 17th as she snagged a sharp hit ball and threw to Thomas at first for the double up.
After turning a traditional 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the 20th, Pawlowski led off the bottom half with a lead-off walk. After Melvin drew a walk to move Pawlowski to second and with two outs, McCaffery ended the contest with a sharp liner up the middle to plate the winning run.
