#7 Softball Splits on Saturday, Takes Down Geneva, 10-4, but Falls to #11 Bethel, 3-1

WINTER HAVEN, FL -- #7 Rowan split its two games on Saturday on the second day of its Spring Break trip, taking down Geneva, 10-4, but falling to #11 Bethel, 3-1.

Against Geneva, Abigail Pawlowski was 4-for-4 with four RBI's and four runs scored, both career highs. Cat Thomas added three hits and Liz McCaffery and McKenzie Melvin each knocked in two runs as the Profs built a 9-0 through the fifth.

Pawlowski's two-run single was part of a four-run second. Later in the fourth, McCaffery added a two-run single with Thomas driving in Melvin to add to the lead.

Starter Emily McCutcheon held the Tornadoes without a hit for the first four innings as the sophomore allowed one run on three hits and tied a personal best with four strikeouts.

Geneva got on the board in the fifth with four runs to cut into the lead. Pawlowski tripled in the seventh and was driven home on Grace Shukaitis' RBI double to account for the scoring.

The day's second game vs. #11 Bethel featured a pitcher's duel between the Profs' Rylee Lutz and the Royals' Kayla Simacek. Lutz yielded two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts while Simacek fanned seven, limiting Rowan to one run on three hits.

After a one-out error followed by a double to put runners on second and third in the fourth, Bethel's Abby Otterness made it 2-0 with her two-run single. The Profs looked to answer in the bottom half, as Payton MacNair (single) and McCaffery (double) reached to start the inning. Thomas followed with a sac fly to right to plate MacNair, but Simacek induced a pop up and grounder to end the Rowan threat.

Bethel tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI single to make it a two-run contest.

Rowan was sent down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

MacNair, Melvin, and McCaffery accounted for the three Prof hits.

The Profs return to action tomorrow with a 9:15 a.m. showdown with #8 Case Western Reserve followed by a matchup with Coast Guard.
