#7 Softball Stumbles to #8 Case Western Reserve, 4-1, but Rebounds with 4-0 Win over Coast Guard

CLERMONT, FL -- #7 Rowan dropped a 4-1 decision to #8 Case Western Reserve but rebounded with a 4-0 shutout win over Coast Guard to close out Sunday's action at The Spring Games down Florida.

Liz McCaffery and Abigail Pawlowski each had two hits against Case, but the Profs left 10 on base, scoring its lone run in the sixth.

A leadoff triple to start the game helped give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the first. Kela Jagoda scored from third on an RBI single from Stevie Rieger. In the second,

Karen Potts cleared the bases with a two-out double to plate three runs and add to the deficit.

Rowan got two runners on in each of the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings, but could not get on the board.

Cami Morgan's pinch hit RBI single in the sixth scored Pawlowski.

Emily McCutcheon entered in relief in the second, and struck out a career-high five batters, while yielding two hits and one walk the rest of the of way.

The day's second game against the Bears saw Rylee Lutz back in the circle where she fired a nine-strikeout shutout where the junior scattered six hits and had no walks. McKenzie Melvin tied a personal best with four hits while Grace Shukaitis was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Cat Thomas knocked in Payton MacNair in the first on a two-out single for a 1-0 edge. Melvin would lead off the third with a double to left, move up on a sac bunt, and later score on a wild pitch. It became 3-0 in the fourth on MacNair's RBI single to plate Shukaitis.

Coast Guard threatened to in the bottom of the fifth, getting runners on at second and third with one out. Lutz recorded a strikeout and grounder to end the frame and keep the Bears scoreless.

Shukaitis capped the scoring in the seventh with her RBI single to score pinch-runner Hanna Bryszewski.

The Profs return to action on Tuesday with games against Swarthmore at 11:30 a.m. and St. Scholastica following at 1:45 p.m.
