#7 Softball Gets Walk-Off and Shutout Wins In First Day of Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, FL -- #7 Rowan got its Spring Break trip in Florida off on the right foot on Friday, as a bases-loaded walk gave the Profs a 7-6 walk-off win over Marietta in eight innings and later a shutout against Ursinus, 8-0.

Kaitlyn Riggs drew a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to cap a two-run inning to start the day. In Friday's other contest, starter Emily McCutcheon tossed a complete game shutout with home runs from Cat Thomas and McKenzie Melvin helped Rowan pull away late.

Game one
Rowan took on Marietta in a matchup of two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. After the Pioneers crossed a run in the first, the Profs plated four in the second highlighted by Payton MacNair's bases-loaded clearing double with two outs. MacNair came around to score on an RBI single from Liz McCaffery.

Marietta plated two runs in the third on a two-run double and later and RBI triple in the fourth pulled the teams even at 4-4.

The teams traded a run each as action went into extra innings. In the top half of the seventh, the Pioneers scored its runner from second on an error as a sac bunt attempt drew a wild throw to first.

Rowan had its chance in the bottom half with Zara MacNair placed on second. She would steal third but see a groundout and popup. McCaffery stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a triple to tie things back up at 6-6. Back-to-back walks to Thomas and Breanna Bryant loaded the bags for Riggs, who worked a 3-1 count before a ball four that was high to plate McCaffery for the winning run.

Payton MacNair finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs. McCaffery also had three hits.

McCutcheon came on in relief of starter Rylee Lutz, going the final 4.1 innings to pick up the win.

Game two
MacNair kept the hot bat, adding another three hits while Thomas was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to help break open a one-run game in the sixth.

McCutcheon kept firing, going all seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out two with no walks.

Melvin reached in the third with two outs, stole second, and scored on MacNair's triple for a 1-0 edge.

It stayed that way until the sixth as a leadoff double from Melvin was followed by another RBI from MacNair. After Grace Shukaitis reached on an error, Thomas hit her second homer of the season, a three-run shot to make it 5-0.

Melvin led off the seventh with a solo blast to left and later RBI's from Thomas and Bryant helped account for the scoring.

The team is right back at it tomorrow with games against Geneva at 1:45 pm and Bethel at 4:45 approximately down in Florida.
