#5 Softball Gets Season Started with a Sweep of SUNY-Oneonta, 8-0, and 7-1

GLASSBORO, NJ -- #5 Rowan got its 2024 season off on the right foot, taking a pair of games from SUNY-Oneonta on Tuesday, winning, 8-0, in game one, and 7-1 in the second.

Game 1 Highlights | Game 2 Highlights

In the first game, pitcher Rylee Lutz yielded just three hits and just one walk as the junior struck out eight. Cami Morgan's walk-off RBI single in the fifth helped solidify the Profs' 8-0 victory. Game two saw Rowan break it open with five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to help complete the sweep.

Game one
Payton MacNair and McKenzie Melvin each had two hits with MacNair knocking in a pair and Melvin scoring twice. In the first and with Melvin at second and one out, MacNair sent a fly ball to deep right where it was tracked down. Melvin was able to take third and beat the throw home on the tag up to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

RBI's from MacNair, Melvin, and Brooke McGuigan in the second upped the lead to 5-0.

It was more than enough for Lutz who put down 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth innings. Now in the bottom half of the fifth and the bases loaded, Breanna Bryant took a hit by pitch to cross a run and later a walk from Kaitlyn Riggs still with the bags full made it 7-0. Morgan came to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered a single to right to induce the eight-run rule.

Game two
Starter Emily McCutcheon scattered eight hits with an unearned run over seven innings with no walks in her first action on the year.

The Red Dragons got on the board in the third, but the Profs used RBI doubles from Cat Thomas and Bryant in the bottom half to reclaim the lead.

It stayed a 2-1 game until the fifth when Rowan crossed a pair of unearned runs to add to the lead. Morgan Tripodi scored on a wild pitch and later Zara MacNair added her first collegiate hit, an RBI single to plate Bryant. Sac flies from Thomas and McGuigan in the sixth and a two-out double from Riggs increased the lead to 7-1.

Payton MacNair was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Thomas drove in two runs.

The Profs head to Salisbury this weekend to play against the host Sea Gulls and Clarkson beginning on Saturday.
