Men's Basketball Returns to Action after the Holiday and Falls to Drew, 96-89

GLASSBORO, NJ  - Khalif Meares scored 27 points and Tyrese Myrick had 19 points but Rowan couldn't overcome Drew, falling, 98-89, in in a non-conference matinee at Esby Gym as the Rangers won their seventh straight.

Meares made 12-of-14 free throws, had six rebounds, five steals and three blocks while Myrick connected on 9-of-18 from the field. Danny Fleming and Taz Cantey added 10 points each for Rowan (6-5).

Drew (8-2) heated up from three-point range in the second half going 5-for-9 in the period. The Rangers took their first 10-point lead of the game, 81-71, and then a 5-0 run by Drew increased its lead to its largest of the contest, 88-75 with 4:22 remaining.

The Profs closed to 88-81 with under three minutes to go using a 6-0 run with four points from Tyrese Myrick, but Drew regained the 10-point lead with 1:10 to play. Rowan got within seven points at :16 but ran out of time.

Drew went up 51-44 early in the second half but Rowan came back to take its first lead since the opening minute, 56-54, at 15:48. The Rangers answered with a 12-4 run, which included back-to-back threes, to regain the lead with a 66-60 advantage.

The teams were tied four times in the first half, and Drew led for all but the opening minute holding its biggest lead, 45-37, with 1:31 left before intermission. Both teams shot over 40 percent from the floor but struggled from three-point range with Drew going 1-for-11 and Rowan hitting just 1-of-5. Meares led the Profs with 11 points in the half.

Rowan goes on the road on Thursday, January 2nd, to face Johns Hopkins in a 3 p.m. start and returns to NJAC play when it visits TCNJ on Wednesday, January 8th.
