#12 Men's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to Vassar in First Round of NCAA Championship

NJAC champion Profs won eight of their last nine games

MIDDLEBURY, VT - Vassar (13-3-3) gained the lead in the first three minutes and then added two late goals en route to a 3-0 win over #12 Rowan in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship, held at Middlebury.

Vassar's Arden Tobolsky headed in a goal at 2:50 into the match and that 1-0 lead remained for the majority of the contest. Tobolsky then put the game out of reach with a goal in the 81st minute and then finished off his hat trick with one in the 88th minute.

The teams each had numerous scoring chances but the Profs couldn't get the tying goal, despite outshooting Vassar, 11-7, in the second half. Vassar keeper Jacob Raphan needed to make 10 saves as Rowan put on the pressure. Dylan Aportela made three saves for Rowan while the Profs outshot the Brewers in the match, 18-13.

Rowan's leading scorer Johnny Troiano had three shots on goal, but was held scoreless. The junior, the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Year, finished the season with a career-high 16 goals.

The Profs (12-5-5) end the year having won eight of nine games, and captured the NJAC regular-season title and conference championship for the second time in three years. Rowan made its 31st all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship and the seventh NCAA appearance, and fourth in the last five years, under head coach Scott Baker.
