AMHERST, MA -- #10 Amherst's Laura Mendell hit the go-ahead three pointer with 53 seconds remaining to break a tie game, as Rowan fell short in a 70-64 score Monday afternoon.
Tied at 60-60 after a triple from the Profs'
Kristina Johnson, Mendell answered on the next possession to give the home team the lead for good.
Johnson, along with
Eliana Santana, and
Charlotte Carlies all finished with nine points while
Kate Herlihy led Rowan with 16. Santana also grabbed a season-best nine rebounds.
Nicole Mallard netted six of her eight points in the second quarter, as the team outscored the Mammoths, 23-18, in the frame to trail by one at halftime (31-30).
The Profs opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the contest since early in the first.
Savanna Holt drained the second of her two three-pointers on the day to give Rowan its largest lead of the game, 40-33, 4:36 into the frame. After Johnson hit from in the paint to make it 49-42 late in the third, Mendell scored the next five points over the final minute of the quarter to trim the lead to just two points going into the final stanza.
In that fourth quarter, the teams traded leads three times before Johnson's late three knotted the game up for the final time at 60-60. Amherst would go 7-of-8 at the free-throw line down the stretch to help pull away for good.
Mendell led all scorers with 22 points for Amherst.
Rowan returns to Glassboro on square off with Montclair State in NJAC action here on Wednesday, January 10th in a 5:30 p.m. start.
