GLASSBORO, NJ –
Amber Powell scored a pair of goals to help #8 Rowan hold off a late rally by Stevens, 4-2, in field hockey action at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium. Powell scored the insurance goal after Stevens had pulled within a one-goal margin, helping the Profs improve to 3-2 on the season.
Powell opened the scoring at 3:13 on one of the 30 penalty corners in the game. After making the insert pass to
Vanessa DiDonato, she received it back quickly and deflected the ball into the cage for her first goal of the year.
DiDonato followed with a goal just minutes later as picked up a steal and went on a breakaway, pushing the ball right between the pads of Stevens' goalie Maria Dante.
Kaylee Wenzel gave Rowan a 3-0 lead before halftime when she collected the ball in a scramble lifted a backhander into the cage from close range.
Stevens (3-1) scored twice in a span of six minutes in the fourth quarter, with goals by Emily Smart and then by Sophia Cozza off a corner to cut the Profs' lead to 3-2 with less than nine minutes to play.
Powell then put the game out of reach in the final minute, scoring a goal off a corner, similar to her first, with
Sidney Pavlishin providing the assist.
Rowan outshot Stevens, 16-11, and the Profs' goalie
Aida Ingram made four saves on the evening.
Rowan completes its four-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts Arcadia at noon.
