Game 2 Highlights
GLASSBORO, NJ --
Cat Thomas delivered the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning of game two to help #15 Rowan to a walk off win in capping an NJAC Doubleheader sweep of TCNJ on Tuesday afternoon. The Profs took the first game, 4-3, and rallied for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
In that second game, Rowan scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up at 2-2. Now into extra innings and with
McKenzie Melvin sacrificed to third after being placed at second, the Profs thought they had it won as Thomas' bunt attempt landed just foul down the first base line. On the next pitch, she made sure this one was fair with her base hit to right to score Melvin.
TCNJ got the first run across in the first on an RBI single from Julia Kinnally. A bases loaded walk in the sixth made it a two-run contest.
Rowan was held to just two hits and two walks up until the sixth when the team took advantage of a key error in the bottom half.
Liz McCaffery singled, then Thomas walked to put two on.
Korie Hague reached on a dropped ball at first off a grounder to short to load the bases.
Breanna Bryant grounded out at second to get McCaffery to come home to make it 2-1.
Abigail Pawlowski's sac fly to center scored sister
Samantha Pawlowski, who came in to pinch run for Thomas, to knot the game up at 2-2.
Thomas helped end the top of the seventh on a great defensive play by snaring a liner at first and doubling off the runner to end the half inning. Kinnally returned the favor in the bottom of the frame as she doubled off Grace Shukatis by snaring a liner in mid-air off the glove of pitcher Gillian Roberts and firing back to first for the double play.
Rylee Lutz entered in the seventh and allowed just the one hit in that inning. She later got two big strikeouts in the eighth and another defensive gem from Thomas with a tough diving snare in front of the bag at first with the runner on second, setting the stage for Rowan in the bottom half.
Starter
Emily McCutcheon went five innings, scattering one run on seven hits with no walks.
Marina Costello got through the sixth before Lutz made her second appearance of the day.
Melvin and Pawlowski each had a double as Rowan was held to four hits, but used five walks to help grind out the win.
In the day's first game, Shukatis' two-run double and later a two-bagger from MacNair to plate Shukaitis was part of a three-run second inning. Kinnally answered with a two-out RBI single in the top of the third to cut into the Prof lead.
In the fifth, Thomas hit a double down the left field line to score Melvin to reclaim a two-run edge. Pawlowski's outfield assist with her throw home on a single to left ended the sixth, but not before Kinnally scored on a RBI double from Camryn Kitchin.
Lutz started game one, striking out four with one walk while yielding three runs (one earned) on eight hits. Leading 4-3 in the seventh after the Lions scored on a throwing error off a single to center with a runner on first, Lutz induced a grounder to first to lock it up for the first win of the doubleheader.
MacNair doubled twice while she and Bryant finished with two hits each.
Next up for the Profs is two games at Montclair State this Saturday in an NJAC twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
