MONTCLAIR, NJ -- #15 Softball won game one, 5-4, in eight innings and game two by the score of 8-2 to take a NJAC Doubleheader up at Montclair State on Sunday.
The two victories stretches the Profs' win streak to 10 games and improves the team to a 27-3 and 10-0 conference record on the season.
Game one
Payton MacNair and
Cat Thomas each had three hits while
Korie Hague delivered the go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning to stave off momentum from a late rally by the Red Hawks
Starter
Rylee Lutz labored through all eight innings, striking out seven with four walks and four runs on 10 hits to move to 15-2 this year.
Rowan rebounded from giving up a 4-2 lead in the seventh with two outs by scoring in the top half of the eighth and Lutz closing the door in the bottom half with back-to-back strikeouts to end it.
Tied at 1-1 heading into the fourth, the Profs plated three runs on three hits highlighted by MacNair's RBI triple to score
Grace Shukaitis.
Montclair cut it to 3-2 scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of inning.
Now in the seventh after two outs on the first three batters, a single and a walk loaded the bases for MSU's Jenna Meluso who drove in two runs with a base hit down the line in right.
Liz McCaffery was placed on second to start the eighth and was moved over to third on a sacrifice from Thomas. McCaffery scored on Hague's grounder to short to retake the lead. The Red Hawks would also move its ghost runner to third on a sac bunt in the bottom of the frame, but Lutz notched her sixth and seventh strikeouts of the game to lock it up.
Game two
Rowan led 6-0 after the first two innings giving starter
Emily McCutcheon the early lead. The freshman went all seven innings, yielding two runs on four hits, with a strikeout and no walks for her sixth win of the season.
MacNair scored three times and walked once while
McKenzie Melvin was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Breanna Bryant drove in two runs and walked twice.
Taking a quick 2-0 lead the first, the Profs took advantage of a big two-run error in the second that lead to four unearned runs in the inning. Thomas doubled home McCaffery who later scored on Bryant's RBI single to give the visitors a 6-0 edge.
Bryant added her second RBI hit in the fifth with Melvin's sac fly to make it 8-0.
Montclair added runs in the fifth (RBI single) and seventh (RBI double).
Next up for Rowan is a doubleheader at Stockton on Tuesday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
