GLASSBORO, NJ -- #15 Rowan's bid for a last-inning rally in game two came up just short as the Profs battled Swarthmore to a split on Tuesday afternoon. In game one, Rowan won, 13-5, in five innings but suffered a 4-3 defeat in the nightcap.
Korie Hague was 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored as the home team took advantage of nine walks in the first game. Her RBI single in the first got Rowan on the board, kickstarting a four-run inning. It was later 6-0 Rowan before the Garnet plated five runs in the third to cut the lead to just one run.
Now leading 7-5 in the fifth, the Profs erupted for six runs on six hits and three walks.
Grace Shukaitis ended things with her RBI single to plate
Breanna Bryant for the eight-run advantage.
Rylee Lutz navigated through five innings, yielding those five runs on five hits. Shukaitis and
Abigail Pawlowski each had two hits and two RBI's while
Gabbie Fonollosa walked three times.
In the second game, Swarthmore used a two-run double from Brooke Coneeny in the top of the seventh to take a late lead and hold off a late Rowan push.
Liz McCaffery knocked in
Payton MacNair with an RBI double in the first and later came around to score on a run-scoring single from
Cat Thomas to stake the Profs to a 2-0 lead.
Swarthmore tied things up in the third getting a sac fly from Alexandra Simon and an RBI single from Avery McClure.
Rookie
Emily McCutcheon entered in the fourth with two runners on and no outs and was able to get out of danger with no runs. Shukaitis threw a runner out at home off a single to right for the third out of the inning.
MacNair's RBI single in the bottom half put Rowan back on top, 3-2. McCutcheon spun out of another spot in the fifth with runners on second and third before being lifted for Lutz in the sixth.
With runners on first and second in the top of the seventh with one out, Coneeny snuck one down the line in left to plate two runs and give the Garnet a 4-3 edge.
The Profs looked to get something going in the bottom half. Walks from Pawlowski and McCaffery put two on, but a fly out to center and a game-ending grounder that was snagged by pitcher Emily Bertrand gave the visitors the one-run decision.
Shukaitis and Pawlowski had two walks each as the Profs were given eight free passes but were limited to just five hits.
Rowan will open NJAC play on Saturday when they travel to William Paterson for two starting at 1 p.m.
