#15 Softball Takes Two at William Paterson to Kick Off NJAC Play

WAYNE, NJ -- #15 Rowan kicked off conference play with a doubleheader sweep at William Paterson on Sunday, taking game one, 3-0, and the second, 6-3.

Cat Thomas was one of the offensive catalysts, collecting five hits including two homers and two doubles to help the Profs to the NJAC sweep.

Game one
Starter Rylee Lutz threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 10 with just three walks for her tenth win on the season.

Thomas, Liz McCaffery, and Gabbie Fonollosa each had two hits apiece as the Profs tacked on a run in the second and two in the fourth.

After Fonollosa scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second, she would later come around to score on an RBI double off the bat of Payton MacNair in the fourth. McCaffery knocked in MacNair, upping the lead to three runs.

It was plenty for Lutz who notched her second career double-digit strikeout start. She spun out of a spot in the seventh, with runners on the corners, as she put the final touches with a game-ending grounder.

Game two
Thomas hit a pair of solo home runs while Abigail Pawlowski was 4-for-5 and Breanna Bryant was 3-for-3 with two runs scored as Rowan crossed a pair of late insurance runs to help with the sweep.

The Pioneers scored twice in the second to take a 2-1 lead but not before Thomas hit the first of her two homers on the day plus a big two-run double from Fonollosa in the third to put the visitors back on top. William Paterson cut the deficit to one run in the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Gabriella Brancaccio.

Thomas went deep again to lead off the sixth for her team-leading sixth on the season and added an RBI double to plate Pawlowski in the seventh.

Marina Costello entered in the third for starter Emily McCutcheon and went 2.1 scoreless innings on just two hits to pick up the win.

Rowan returns home to continue NJAC play with a DH on Tuesday against Rutgers-Camden.
