Softball Starts Florida Trip With Two Wins on Friday

WINTER HAVEN, FL -- Rowan opened its Spring Florida Trip with two wins on Friday, getting a walk-off win in extra innings over Monmouth, 3-2, and later a 15-2 victory over Gordon.

In Friday's first game, Devyn DiPasquale delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth to plate the winning run. The run came after the Profs tied things up at 2-2 thanks to a two-run home run from Cat Thomas.

The Scots jumped ahead in their first at bat, as Madelyn Belville singled home two runs for a quick 2-0 lead.

Starter Rylee Lutz settled back in a did not allow a hit until she was lifted in the sixth. The sophomore struck out seven with two walks in six-plus innings of work. Emily McCutcheon came on in that sixth with runners on first and second and no outs. She would work out of that spot with three groundouts to keep Monmouth off the board.

After Liz McCaffery reached on an error to start the bottom of the inning, Thomas cranked the first pitch she saw over the fence in left for her second homer of the season to make it a 2-2 contest.

McCutcheon earned the win, going three scoreless innings of relief.

The second game saw Rowan take advantage of four Gordon errors over the first two innings to help build a 7-0 advantage. After crossing a pair of runs in the first, Thomas highlighted a five spot in the second with a two-run double.

Breanna Bryant led off the third with shot to right for her first collegiate home run. Later in the frame, she added an RBI single for another five-run inning. In the fourth, McKenzie Melvin went deep on a two-run shot for her seventh career longball. The game ended after the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

Marina Costello and Veronica Goode combined on a one-hitter with Costello earning the win. The starter went three innings with three K's and two walks. Goode worked the final two innings.

The Profs play two again tomorrow with a 9 a.m. matchup with Fredonia State prior to a 2 p.m. contest with Plymouth State.
