GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan jumped out to a 22-5 lead and never looked back as the Profs defeated Rutgers-Newark, 83-41, in an NJAC women's basketball matchup at Esby Gym. The victory, on Rowan's celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day, improves the Profs to 15-8 (12-5 NJAC) as they have now won seven of their last eight contests.
Ny'emah Middleton and
Dakota Adams led the balanced effort with 10 points apiece, as 15 players got into the scoring column.
Kristina Johnson and
Jess McLaughlin each added eight points while
Nicole Mallard had a career-high six steals as the Profs forced Rutgers-Newark (3-21; 1-16) into committing 36 turnovers.
The Profs rattled off 12 straight points early in the game to build up the decisive lead, while shooting 10-for-16 from the floor and making 4-of-7 three-pointers. By the end of the first quarter, Rowan held a 29-13 lead.
The home team cooled off a bit in the second quarter, but still outscored Rutgers-Newark, 18-9, to own a commanding 47-20 advantage at halftime.
Rowan kept building on the lead in the third quarter, holding Rutgers-Newark to just six points and 2-for-13 shooting, while achieving a 40-point margin, 64-24, with 1:16 remaining in the period. The Profs cleared the bench in the fourth quarter and the squad put together a 6-for-13 shooting effort.
The Profs will close out the regular season on Wednesday, February 15, when they host Montclair State on "Senior Night" at 7:30 p.m.
