MONTCLAIR, NJ -- A late interception from
Miles Cook helped Rowan to a 21-14 NJAC win at Montclair State on Saturday.
The senior made his first career pick on a 1st and 10 near midfield to end a drive from the Red Hawks with 1:56 left in the game.
Montclair State had scored on its previous drive in the fourth quarter, getting a one-yard score with 4:34 to play.
Offensively, freshman quarterback
Nate Maiers tossed three touchdowns on 11-of-14 passing for 161 yards and a pair of interceptions. Two of those scores went to
Kevin Degnan, as finished with four grabs for 89 yards. The first coming on a 76-yard deep throw in the first and later a seven-yard strike in the third.
Shane Martin (42 yards) and
Andrew Spinello (25) each added three catches apiece. Martin caught a 20-yard TD right before halftime.
Aeneas Robinson led the team in tackles for the second-straight week, collecting eight stops.
Eric Bryant recorded seven solo tackles.
The defense made a fourth-down stop on the opening possession of the contest, turning away Montclair on a 4th and 2 from the Rowan 40. The Red Hawks would get the ball back just five plays later on an interception from Alex Buchwald. MSU took the ensuing possession down to the Rowan 19, but Greg Casimir's 39-yard field goal attempt was no good.
Maiers hooked up with Degnan on a 3rd and 6 from the Rowan 24, going 76 yards at the 3:10 mark to give Rowan a 7-0 lead. Montclair State scored off Maiers' interception in the second at the Rowan 36, using a short field where Abellany Mendez ran it in from 10 yards out to make it 7-7. Maiers then led the offense on a 7-play 63-yard drive capped with Martin's TD grab with 51 second in the half.
Cook looked to have a pick late in the quarter as the Red Hawks moved quickly down to the Rowan 9, but a pass interference call kept the ball with the home team. The Rowan defense made a big stop from its own 2-yard line with two seconds remaining in the half.
Carter Williams's tackle on Henry Lewis at the one kept the score 14-7 at intermission.
Rowan got great field position to start the third as
KaRon Laws ran back the second-half kickoff 82 yards to the Montclair 10. Three plays later on a 3rd and 7, Maiers found Degnan for the second TD of the day to up the lead to 14 points. The defense came alive again on the ensuing MSU possession, as a pass on 4th and 4 from the Rowan 19 fell incomplete. The Profs looked to tack on some more points, driving down to the Montclair 10, but a 27-yard field goal try from
Connor Batten was no good.
The teams would trade punts over the next four possessions before the Red Hawks cut the lead to 21-14 as Aidan McLaughlin ran it in from one yard out with 4:34 to go. MSU finally forced the Profs to punt it back with 1:48 where they started from its own 33. After a short completion on first down, Cook's leaping snare turned the ball back over and Rowan was able to take three knees on offense to salt the win away.
McLaughlin was 24-of-38 for 259 yards for Montclair State. Zach Lewis was his favorite target, as he totaled 111 yards on eight catches.
Rowan remains on the road next week as the Profs travel to Kean for an NJAC matchup on Saturday, November 4th.
