Defense Solid as Football Cages Kean, 16-6

UNION, NJ -- James Fara rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown while the Rowan defense returned a fumble for a score and held Kean to 177 total yards as the Profs took down Kean, 16-6, Saturday afternoon in an NJAC contest.

Jason Blanks added an interception and a forced fumble in the first half while Vincent Guarino and Joe Racobaldo had a sack and a tackle for loss to help Rowan hold the Cougars to just 15 rushing yards on the day. Cody Young put down a career-high seven tackles as well.

A Nate Maiers-to-Shane Martin 54-yard completion on Rowan's second drive of the game put the Profs at the Kean 15. Four plays later, Fara ran it in from five yards out for his third TD on the season and gave the visitors the first points 7:05 into the game. After a three and out, the offense again drove the ball deep in Cougar territory. Rowan settled for a 20-yard chip shot field goal from Connor Batten to add to the lead in the first quarter.

Blanks forced fumble came on the second play of the second quarter, giving the Profs the ball at its own 39. Three plays into the drive, Fara rumbled for 26 yards to the Kean 16, however a fourth down attempt from the Kean 30 after an offensive interference penalty was no good, turning the ball over to the home team. The Cougars moved the ball to the Rowan 15 in six plays, but Blanks would snare his fourth interception on the year, as he snagged a pass in the end zone to end the threat.

On the next Kean possession, Chris Rodgers scooped up a fumbled snap and returned it to the house from the Cougar 12. The extra point was no good but gave the Profs a 16-0 lead at the 3:59 mark.

A fumble deep in Rowan territory was recovered by Kean with 1:39 left in the half. Christian Rando found Dazzy Iannuzzio on an eight-yard scoring pass to get the home team on the board. The ensuing two-point play was no good, keeping it at 16-6.

After a scoreless third quarter, Rowan put together a 19-play, 68-yard drive down to the Kean 11, but a 28-yard field goal attempt from Tommy Laperierre went wide right.

The defense would shut down the Cougars the rest of the way as Kean did not get past midfield en route to the win.

Maiers finished the day 1ith 169 yards on 18-of-25 passing. Marlon Boston added 58 yards on 13 carries. While Martin totaled a game-high 92 yards on five catches and Kevin Degnan kicked in six grabs for 40 yards.

Rando was 16-of-32 for 162 yards with a TD and interception and added a team-high 26 yards on the ground. Ianuzzo registered six catches for 57 yards

Rowan will close out the season next Friday when William Paterson visits Coach Richard Wackar stadium on Military Appreciation Night and Senior Night in a 7 p.m. start.
