BALTIMORE, MD - Second-half goals by
Kristiina Castagnola and
Julia Patrone propelled #3 Rowan to a 2-1 win over #2 Johns Hopkins in field hockey action this evening. The Profs remain unbeaten at 4-0 after scoring the road victory while handing Johns Hopkins (3-1) its first defeat.
The teams were scoreless after one half of play until Castagnola scored just two minutes into the third quarter.
Julia Cavicchio sent the ball in after a penalty corner and Castagnola took a rebound of the Profs' first shot and connected on her third goal of the year.
Patrone gave Rowan a 2-0 cushion in the 49th minute, when
Liz Fox passed the ball to her just over midfield. The sophomore dribbled the ball down the field and put the ball in the cage to the left side for her third goal of the season.
Hopkins narrowed the Profs' lead to 2-1 in the fourth quarter as Megan Chang scored at 52:47. The Blue Jays put on the pressure in the final minutes but Rowan goalie
Abby Hainsworth withstood the challenge and secured the win.
JHU outshot the Profs, 20-11, but Hainsworth made a career-high 10 saves to preserve the victory.
"We made some good halftime adjustments that allowed us to get transition up the field. Defensively we did a great job in the fourth quarter and Abby made some key saves for us," said head coach
Michelle Andre.
Both teams were participants in the NCAA Semifinals last season, with Hopkins advancing to the title game, while Rowan fell to eventual champion Middlebury.
