COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Senior
Bridget Guinan scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining to lift third-ranked Rowan to a 2-1 win over #13 Ursinus in the opening game of the 2022 field hockey season for both teams.
Guinan took a pass from
Kristiina Castagnola on the right wing into the circle, and the senior put it into the far side of the cage for the 10th game-winning goal of her career with 5:13 to play.
Rowan dominated the game, peppering Ursinus goalie Jordan Ulsh with 30 shots, but the Profs couldn't find the back of the net until the third quarter. Trailing 1-0 since the first four minutes of the game, Rowan kept up the pressure after halftime, and after three straight penalty corners, sophomore
Julia Patrone took the feed from
Liz Fox, and scored the tying goal, and the Profs' first of the year, at 33:32.
"We did a lot of things well and scored at the times we needed to. The team played solid midfield defense," said head coach
Michelle Andre.
Ursinus struck early when Lauren Weaver scored off a penalty corner at 4:10.
Rowan had 17 shots on goal, compared to two from Ursinus, with goalkeeper
Abby Hainsworth making one save. The Bears' Ulsh made 15 stops in the contest.
The Profs open their home schedule on Saturday when they take on Catholic in a 1 p.m. start at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.
