Lutz Twirls Five-Hitter in 10-1 Win over Muhlenberg to Move #17 Softball into NCAA Regional Championship Series; Wilson Hits Coaching Milestone

Profs to once again face Tufts at noon on Sunday; Wilson wins career game #900

MEDFORD, MA -- #17 Rowan remained alive in the NCAA Tournament Regional with a 10-1 victory over Muhlenberg in an elimination game late Friday afternoon.

The Profs now move on to play Tufts tomorrow at noon in the championship series, needing to win two games in order to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend. Should the Rowan win the first game, a winner-take-all matchup will start following the conclusion of the 12 p.m. contest.

With the win, head coach Kim Wilson captured career coaching victory #900. In 32 seasons as a head coach, including 26 at Rowan and six at Washington & Jefferson, Wilson has amassed a 900-339-1 record and is one of the most winningest coaches in Division III.

Freshman pitcher Rylee Lutz twirled a four-hitter, striking out six with three walks to help the Profs play another day. McKenzie Melvin, Payton MacNair, and Devyn DiPasquale all had two hits and two runs apiece. Liz McCaffery and Korie Hague knocked in two runs each and Breanna Bryant added a pair of doubles.

Cat Thomas singled home McCaffery in the second for the game's first run. In the next inning, Melvin tripled and would come home on an RBI single from MacNair, who later scored on RBI double from McCaffery to put the Profs up, 3-0.

In the fourth, Grace Shukaitis' sac fly to left allowed Bryant to score to make it 4-0. The Mules got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a solo home run from Raya Kunes.

Lutz spun her way out of a spot in the fifth with two on and two out, getting a fielder's choice at second for the third out.

Rowan crossed four unearned runs in sixth, thanks to three hits and a Muhlenberg error, highlighted by Hague's two-run single.

Melvin knocked in a run while Morgan Zane drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to tack on two more runs.

In the bottom of the frame, Lutz worked a 1-2-3 inning to improve to 13-3 on the season.
