NCAA Tournament Run Ends for #17 Softball in Regional Final Loss to Tufts, 3-2

MEDFORD, MA -- #17 Rowan had its run through the NCAA Regional Tournament come to an end as Tufts used a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to knock the Profs out of the postseason in a 3-2 defeat in the championship series on Sunday.

Rowan needed a win to force a winner-take-all second game to decide who advances to the super regional round.

Emily August, Cat Thomas, and McKenzie Melvin were selected to the all-regional tournament team.

August labored through 7.1 innings, scattering three runs (one earned) on seven hits with four walks (two intentional) and five strikeouts. Melvin was 2-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base.

The Profs came hot out of the gate, scoring twice in their first at bat. Melvin singled to lead off the game, stole second and later advanced to third on a groundout. Morgan Zane drove her in to get Rowan on the board. Liz McCaffery was hit by a pitch and Korie Hague followed with a single to load the bags. Thomas then tapped a slow roller to first which went as an infield hit to plate Zane for a 2-0 advantage.

Rowan threatened again in the second, getting runners on second and third with two outs after an error, but a grounder to second ended the scoring chance.

Tufts tied things up in the second on a two-run triple with two outs from Josie Steinburg that landed just inside the right field line.

After a lead-off triple from Michele Adelman in the bottom of the eighth, Rowan issued two-straight intentional walks to load the bases. The Jumbo's Rachel Moore hit a fly ball to deep center where Melvin tracked it down, but the relay home was not in time as Tufts plated the winning run to move on in the tournament.

The loss ends the season for the team and its four seniors: August, Hague, Zane, and Rebecca Lombardo. The foursome were a part of two NJAC Championships and two NCAA Tournaments including a run to the NCAA Championship Tournament in Oklahoma City in 2018 helping to compile a 139-47-2 record in that span.
