August Flirts With Perfection as #18 Softball Takes Two From Rutgers-Newark

GLASSBORO, NJ -- #18 Rowan ran its unbeaten streak to 11 games as the Profs took a pair of games from visiting Rutgers-Newark on Saturday in a NJAC doubleheader. In game one, pitcher Emily August had her perfect game broken up in the seventh as she twirled a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory. Morgan Zane and Cat Thomas each knocked in three runs as the squad collected 15 hits in the 10-5 win in game two.

Game one
August struck out nine batters, and was one pitch away from a perfect game, but a base hit on an 0-2 count thwarted the opportunity in the seventh.

Zane's sac fly in the third scored Grace Shukaitis for a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the fifth when McKenzie Melvin tripled to right, then came home on an RBI groundout from Payton MacNair.

August cruised, totaling 87 pitches to improve to 10-3 on the season. Melvin was officially 2-for-3 with a run scored. Korie Hague added a double.

Game two
Both Zane and Thomas tied career highs with three hits apiece. Zane also scored three times. Melvin, MacNair, and Hague collected two hits each as the team tied a season high with 15 hits.

The two teams broke out the bats early on, scoring runs in each of their first two at-bats. After the Scarlet Raiders went ahead 1-0 in the first, the Profs crossed three in the bottom half. RBI hits from Zane and Thomas, along with a sac fly from Breanna Bryant, put the home team ahead.

Rutgers-Newark looked to keep pace, getting a two-run double from Alex Di Martino in top of the second to make it a 3-3 game. In the bottom half, the duo of Zane and Thomas came through as each added two-out RBIs for a two-run lead.

In the third, the Profs put together six hits to plate four runs. An RBI double from Shukaitis, later followed by, you guessed it, RBIs from Zane and Thomas help up the lead to 9-3.

Thomas entered the circle in the second inning in relief, where she earned the win (2-1), allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. August relieved Thomas in the fourth and yielded one run on a hit with four K's to close it down.

The team is back in action on Tuesday at The College of New Jersey for two games starting at 2:30 p.m.
