Game 2 Highlights
GLASSBORO, NJ -- Rowan locked up the #1 seed in the NJAC Softball Tournament with its doubleheader sweep of New Jersey City on Saturday as the team also celebrated Senior Day. The Profs took game one, 4-0, behind a one-hit shutout from
Emily August. Game two ended on a two-run walk off single from
Morgan Zane in the sixth for an 8-0 victory to wrap up the regular season.
The Profs will host a first-round game on Tuesday against #6 Montclair State starting at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 for adults; $2.00 for children, students, and senior citizens. Rowan won both of its regular season meetings against the Red Hawks back on April 16th.
After the conclusion of the second game, the team and coaching staff took time to honor the team's four seniors (August,
Korie Hague,
Rebecca Lombardo, and
Morgan Zane) and a graduate from the 2021 team (
Kelly Duffy). Prior to the first game, the team celebrated Pride Day by having the new Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Academic Support,
Mandy Jiang, who also has spearheaded the creation of Rowan Athletics' LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group, throw out the first pitch.
Game one
August struck out 10 with no walks for her fourth game this season with double-digit K's as her record improved to 16-4.
Rowan plated all three runs in the first, two of which came off the bat of
Liz McCaffery who delivered a two-run triple with two outs to score
Payton MacNair and Zane. McCaffery trotted home in the next at-bat on a passed ball for a three-run lead.
It was more than enough for August, getting 1-2-3 innings until a lead-off single in the sixth broke up her perfect game attempt.
MacNair had two of the team's five hits while McCaffery added a stolen base.
Game two
Melvin was 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI while Hague and Zane added multiple hits and RBIs. Starter
Rylee Lutz notched a season-high eight strikeouts in the circle, moving to 12-3 on the year.
The Profs struck early once again, getting a four-spot in the first inning as a two-run single from Hague highlighted the frame.
NJCU threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. Lutz spun a strikeout for the second out and then induced a groundout to shut down the visitors.
McKenzie's outfield assist to end the top of the sixth, throwing out a runner at home on a single up the middle helped spark the offense in the bottom half of the inning. After RBI singles from Melvin and MacNair, Zane provided the last say, driving in both runners to kick in the eight-run rule and claim the NJAC DH sweep.
Other first-round action on Tuesday has #5 Stockton at #2 Kean and #4 TCNJ at #3 Ramapo. The teams will advance in the double elimination format onto Friday's action hosted by Kean.
