Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan; Tyler Cannon Goes 5-for-8 on the Day

Teams play again on Sunday at 11 a.m.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The 11th-ranked Rowan baseball team split a doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan (6-2), with the Profs winning the first game, 4-2, and the Marlins taking the nightcap, 3-2, on a walk-off single in the eighth inning.

Tyler Cannon went 5-for-8 at the plate for Rowan (2-1) in the two games, scoring three runs and driving in one.

In the opener, the teams were scoreless until the sixth inning when Rowan (2-1) scored first, as Ryan Murphy doubled to score Cannon. The Profs scored two more in the seventh when Chris Curcio hit a two-run double, scoring Anthony Schooley, and Trip McCaffrey reached base on a bunt, that allowed Curcio to cross the plate.

Virginia Wesleyan picked up two runs in the seventh and eighth, but pinch hitter Patrick Defeciani sealed the win with an RBI single to score Cannon.

Eli Atiya pitched six scoreless innings and notched five strikeouts to earn the victory.  Michael Miles had two innings of work with three strikeouts and Christian Bascunan earned the first save of his career, working the final inning and allowing just one hit and striking out one.

In the second game, Rowan had a similar scoring play in the first inning as it did in the first game, with Murphy driving in Cannon to take a 1-0 lead. The Profs scored another in the sixth after Cannon singled to bring home Eric DiDomenico, giving them a 2-0 lead.

But the Marlins tied the game in the seventh on a two-run double and sent it to the extra inning in the eight. Virginia Wesleyan had two men on and Matt Sinko came through with an RBI single to allow Jaelen Hines to score the winning run.

Donald Zellman got the start and went six innings and striking out five. Bascunan and Mike Shannon came in relief with Shannon suffering the loss.

The teams will play again tomorrow at 11 a.m.
