#9 Baseball Closes Out Play in Florida with a Split; Profs Defeat Southwest Baptist and Fall to Amherst

AUBURNDALE, FL - The ninth-ranked Rowan baseball team used a pair of three-run home runs from Eric DiDomenico and Ryan Mostrangeli to propel the Profs to a 10-8 win over Southwest Baptist in the first game today at the RussMatt Invitational.

The Profs closed out their spring trip with an evening game against Amherst, losing 9-1, and head back north with an 8-3 record.

Against SBU, DiDomenico went 4-for-4 while Mostrangeli was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Patrick Defeciani and Anthony Schooley garnered two hits and two RBI apiece for the Profs.

Reliever Chris Au earned his first career victory as he allowed just one run and struck out five in three innings of work in relief of starter Ben Iervolino. David Levin recorded his first save of the year.

Southwest Baptist, an NCAA Division II opponent, got on the board first, 1-0, but the Profs responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Schooley had the inning's big hit, with a two-run double that brought home DiDomenico and Deficiani, giving Rowan a 3-1 lead.

SBU scored three runs in the third and then got a solo home run in the fifth to move ahead, 5-3. Rowan countered with a three-run shot by DiDomenico that scored Defeciani and Mostrangeli as the Profs took the lead for good, 6-5.

The following inning, it was Mostrangeli's turn as he blasted his fourth homer of the season, which scored Tyler Cannon and Mark Hernandez, as the Profs expanded the lead to 9-5.

The Profs added an insurance run in the eighth on a single by Defeciani that scored Ryan Murphy.

SBU fought back with two in the top of the ninth, but with two outs, Levin entered and recorded the final out to earn the save.

In Rowan's second game of the day, Amherst scored three in the second inning and fourth in the fourth on a grand slam, and added another in the sixth on a solo home run to take a 7-0 lead and eventually go up by 9-0. The Profs countered with one in the eighth when Murphy doubled to bring home Ryan West. Starter Donald Zellman took the loss.

The Profs return home and will visit Haverford on Monday before playing the home opener against York (PA) on Tuesday, March 22 at 3:30 p.m.
