AUBURNDALE, FL - Trip McCaffrey singled in the eighth to drive in the game-winning runs as #9 Rowan defeated #11 Wheaton, 4-2, in baseball action at the RussMatt Invitational.
With the score tied at 2-2 since the fourth inning, Ryan Mostrangeli walked and Pat Defeciani was intentionally walked. McCaffrey then hit a two-out single to bring home Mostrangeli and pinch runner Chris Serrano to give the Profs a 4-2 lead and eventually the win.
Reliever Mike Shannon, who had shut down Wheaton since the sixth inning, allowed just one baserunner in the eighth and Christian Bascunan entered in the ninth and earned the save for Rowan (6-2).
Wheaton (2-1) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single from Mike Maher.
Rowan got on the board in the fourth on back-to-back solo home runs by Eric DiDomenico and Anthony Schooley.
Both teams' starting pitchers - Eli Atiya and Stephen Quigley - kept it scoreless from that point on. Atiya got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth with two strikeouts and a throw by RF Ryan Murphy to get Kevin Matos out at the plate after Robert Wirtanen had doubled down the right field line.
Shannon earned the victory, his first of the year, as he struck out three and allowed only one hit in three innings of work while Atiya had eight strikeouts in five innings.
Tyler Cannon was 2-for-5 for the Profs, with Schooley going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Profs continue play in the RussMatt Invitational when they face Wisconsin-La Crosse on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Davenport, FL.
