#18 Softball Picks Up Pair of Shutouts on Sunday

LEESBURG, FL – Rowan scored a pair of shutouts on Sunday at The Spring Games defeating Amherst, 13-0, and then blanking Wisconsin-La Crosse, 5-0.

The Profs used a big 10-run third inning in taking down Amherst in the day's first game and later limiting the Eagles to just three hits.

Morgan Zane was officially 1-for-1 with three runs scored, also reaching base via a walk and hit by pitch. Grace Shukaitis delivered the big hit in that third inning, as her double just inside the first base bag cleared the bases to make it 9-0. For Shukaitis, the four RBI's in the game were a career high.

Starter Rylee Lutz scattered two hits through three innings along with three strikeouts to improve to 4-0 this season. Emily Arnold tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

In the second game of the day, Emily August struck out five with just two walks and three hits in the complete game shutout of the Eagles.

McKenzie Melvin helped get Rowan on the board in the first, hitting her team-leading fifth home run, this time a two-run shot.

In the fifth, the Profs scored two runs on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, the Eagles' Remington Stark uncorked a wild pitch that allowed pinch runner April Laury to score from third. Melvin scored on the same play, as the throw from the catcher to the Stark at plate was off the mark. The freshman made a heads up play to race home to up the lead to 4-0.

Rowan took advantage of another wild offering in the sixth, scoring a two-out unearned run as Gabbie Fonollosa trotted home from third.

The team will make up its contest with Millikin tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Hancock Park.
