Ryan Murphy drove in four runs and
Tyler Cannon went 3-for-5 to pace #11 Rowan baseball (1-0) to a 10-4 win over Swarthmore (2-3) in the Profs' season opener. Starter
Jason O'Neill threw four innings to earn his first career win in his first-ever start, in a game which lasted just eight innings due to darkness.
Murphy went 2-for-4 with four RBI, driving in three runs with singles and another on a sacrifice fly. Cannon, making his debut as a Prof after transferring from Iona, had three hits and scored three runs in the victory. Rowan also got a two-run homer from left fielder
Ryan Mostrangeli to get the 2022 season underway.
Tyler Kubrak scored the Profs' first run of the new season in the first inning on Murphy's sacrifice fly. Swarthmore got on the board with a solo homer in the first, but Kubrak also forced in Cannon in the third, while Cannon upped the Rowan lead to 3-1 with his RBI single in the fourth, bringing home
Chris Curcio.
Swarthmore scored one in the fifth but Rowan countered with a three-run sixth as
Trip McCaffrey crossed the plate on a ground out, Murphy drove in one with a single and
Anthony Schooley, a transfer from Villanova, doubled to left to bring home Murphy and give the Profs an 8-2 lead.
The home team got one more in the sixth but Mostrangeli hit the round-tripper to bring home Kubrak to give the Profs their 10th run of the game.
O'Neill had three strikeouts while
Eli Atiya,
Donald Zellman,
Patrick Sudnikovich and
Ryan Iovine each got an inning of work for Rowan.
The Profs next head to Virginia Wesleyan for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
