Softball Breaks the Bats Out with Two Season-Opening Wins

2022 Grand Slam Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, NC -- Rowan kicked off their 2022 season on Friday by notching a pair of wins at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic hosted by William Peace. The Profs took down Alma, 6-2, in the day's first game then claimed a 12-5 win over Arcadia in the second.

The offense came out firing as the Profs collected 21 hits and hit a total of seven home runs in the two wins.

RU vs. Alma
Rowan used a five-run fifth to retake the lead for good. In that frame, the Profs used a two-run homer from freshman McKenzie Melvin, for her first collegiate hit, and later a three-run shot from Liz McCaffery, for her first career dinger, to help erase a 2-1 deficit.

McCaffery finished the game 2-for-3 while Melvin added a stolen base. Morgan Zane was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and Payton McNair scored twice and added two hits.

Starter Emily August yielded just two run on five hits while adding three strikeouts and three walks to pick up the win.

Haley Ulrich walked and added a solo home run for the Scots.

RU vs. Arcadia
The longballs continued against Arcadia as Melvin added her second on the day. Zane clobbered two of her own and tied a career high with four RBI's. Devyn DePasquale and Kaitlyn Riggs added to the homer parade. Rowan totaled 12 hits ad took advantage of seven Arcadia walks.

Rylee Lutz earned her first win in the circle, fanning four with three walks. Korie Hague and Grace Shukaitis also had two hits apiece.

Down 1-0 in the third, Zane connected on a two-out, two-run shot to put Rowan on top. In the next inning, DiPasquale made 4-1 with her two-run homer while Zane and Riggs went deep in the fifth to open up its lead.

After the Knights crossed three in the fifth to cut it to 8-4, Hague singled home Melvin in the top of the sixth. Melvin's two-run shot capped a four-run frame.

On Saturday, Rowan will now play three games as one was moved up from Sunday. The Profs take on Maryville at 10 a.m. followed by a matchup with Christopher Newport at 12:30 p.m. Randolph was added to the slate beginning at 5 p.m.
