RALEIGH, NC -- Rowan was back in action on Saturday at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic hosted by William Peace with three games as one was moved up to today. The Profs went 1-2 on the day, ending the night with a 9-1 win over Randolph. The morning's first game saw Maryville post a 9-6 decision. The second contest had Rowan falling to Christopher Newport, 8-5.
RU vs. Maryville
Payton McNair and
Morgan Zane each collected two hits while MacNair and
McKenzie Melvin added solo home runs but it was the Scots who used a five-run fourth to take over a 3-2 Prof lead.
MacNair led off the game with her third career dinger. Melvin opened the third as the rookie blasted her fourth of the season. In the fourth, MacNair singled home
Breanna Bryant with two outs to give Rowan a 3-2 edge. Jenica Brown had the big hit for Maryville in that fourth with a grand slam.
The Profs crossed three runs in the fifth on just one hit, one walk, and three Scot errors to cut it to 7-6.
Brown would score on a bases loaded walk in the sixth to cap a two-run frame for Maryville. The Profs were able to get two runners on in the seventh but could not pull any closer.
Emily August, who pitched into the fourth allowing five runs on five hits while striking out three and allowing three walks, was tagged with the loss.
RU vs. Christopher Newport
Tied at 4-4, the teams went into extra innings as the Captains plated four runs in the eighth to go on and defeat Rowan.
Trailing 2-0 in the third,
Devyn DiPasquale went deep in the bottom half to get Rowan on the board. Zane highlighted the fourth with a two-run shot.
In the sixth,
Kaitlyn Riggs hit a big two-out RBI single to plate MacNair to knot things up at 4-4. Rowan had a chance to end it in the seventh, getting a runner on second, but a grounder sent the teams into extras via the international tiebreaker rule.
Bailey Roberts connected on a three-run home run for the Captains as part of that four-run eighth to take the lead for good.
RU vs. Randolph
Rowan rode the arm of
Rylee Lutz while Melvin added three hits, three runs scored and another home run to help pace the offense.
The Profs crossed four runs in their first at-bat, thanks to a two-run double from
Liz McCaffery and later a two-run home run from Zane.
It was more than enough for Lutz, who struck out seven, allowing just one run on three hits as Rowan ended it in the fifth getting two runs to enforce the eight-run rule.
McCaffery, Lutz, and Melvin all drove in two runs apiece. Melvin and
April Laury also swiped two bases each.
Tomorrow concludes the weekend festivities as the team will hope to play Susquehanna at 12:30 p.m. Inclement weather is expected.
