HOBOKEN, NJ – The Rowan men's soccer team saw its NCAA Tournament run come to an end when #4 Stevens scored a late equalizer and won the round of penalty kicks to advance in the Hoboken Regional of the NCAA Championship. The game was tied, 1-1, after overtime, but Stevens (16-0-3) outscored the Profs, 4-1, in the penalty kicks.
Rowan ends the year with a 12-5-6 record, but went 7-0-3 in its final 10 matches.
The Profs held a 1-0 lead from the 15th minute, when leading scorer
Chad Yates scored after a long run along the sideline. The senior ends his career with 22 goals and 14 assists and became the first Prof to be named the NJAC Midfielder of the Year.
Despite taking 26 shots, Stevens couldn't get one past Rowan keeper
Dylan Aportela until the 84th minute, when Bruno Andino took a shot from outside the 18, it hit the post and the ball sneaked in. Aportela finished the match with four saves.
The teams played a scoreless overtime, and that set the stage for the penalty kicks. The Ducks converted all four of their attempts, with
Alex Ferrara making the only shot for the Profs.
Although Rowan started out the conference season at 0-2-2, the Profs went unbeaten In eight games, going 6-0-2, to win their 14th NJAC title and the first since 2003. The Profs then earned their third straight NCAA Championship berth and the 29th in the history of the program.
