GLASSBORO, NJ - Third-ranked Salisbury scored the game-winning goal with 35 seconds remaining to edge top-ranked Rowan, 3-2, in a high-level field hockey contest in a battle of two unbeaten teams. The Profs (14-1) suffered their first loss of the year, ending their winning streak at 14.
Â
McKenna Horner had the hat trick to lead Salisbury (14-0), and scored the winner from close range on the end line. Rowan had two straight penalty corners in the final three seconds but couldn't convert.
Â
Horner opened the scoring just eight minutes into the game. Rowan's
Julia Patrone answered right back with her team-high 17th goal of the year as she took a pass from
Kristiina Castagnola on a corner and scored at 9:25.
Â
Castagnola gave Rowan a 2-1 lead as she took the ball on a restart and dribbled into the circle and blasted one through the Salisbury defense with 8:02 left in the third quarter.
Â
Horner tied the game, 2-2, on a backhanded shot from just inside the circle at 47:10. The teams battled the rest of the way and appeared to be headed into overtime, but Horner found a way to give Salisbury the win in the final minute.
Â
Rowan held the advantages in shots (12-8) and corners (7-3), but Salisbury goalkeeper Mackenzie Peacock made seven saves with the Profs'
Abby Hainsworth making two.
Â
The Profs head on the road for the next two games, facing Montclair State on Saturday in an NJAC game and then to Elizabethtown on October 26. Â
