NEWPORT, RI - Salve Regina (4-0) rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to hand Rowan a 50-35 loss in non-conference football action today.
Rowan (0-3) led 28-10 midway through the second quarter and put together a 46-yard drive that ended in a 6-yard touchdown by Ifreke Andy with 3:45 left in the half. But Salve Regina went 77 yards in 10 plays culminating in a 5-yard reception by Max Devito from Jack Maguire with :31 remaining to pull within 35-16.
The Seahawks carried that momentum into the second half and never looked back as Maguire hooked up with Devito again with 9:54 remaining in the third quarter to pull Salve Regina within 35-22. From there, the home team scored once more in the third quarter and three times in the fourth quarter as running back Joey Mauriello accounted for all of them with two rushing TDs and one reception for a score.
Rowan got off to a solid start, as QB Mike Husni ran it in from two yards out to score at 10:33 of the first quarter. The junior then connected with TE CJ Barrett for a 20-yard pass play as the Profs went 68 yards in just 1:30. After a Salve Regina field goal, Rowan put points on the board as Husni tossed a 34-yard pass to John Maldonado to go up, 21-3.
The Profs followed that with another quick drive, as Eddie Jamison caught a 54-yard pass from Husni for his first touchdown of the season.
Husni passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns, completing 16-of-24, while Maldonado had a season-high 111 yards with six receptions.
Rowan has another week off and returns to action on October 9 when it opens NJAC play by traveling to Kean.
