Box Score MONTCLAIR, NJ – A goal by
Leo Montesinos early in the second half proved to be the gamewinner as fourth-seeded Rowan (12-3-1) upset top-seeded and 11th-ranked Montclair State, 1-0, in the NJAC Semfinals. The Profs now advance to the NJAC Championship match on Saturday at third-seeded Kean, with a 5 p.m. start.
Montesinos put a low shot past MSU goalkeeper Shane Keenan into the left side of the goal at 49:56. It was the midfielder's second goal of the year and his second gamewinner in the last three matches.
The goal would hold up for the final 40 minutes helped by the play of Rowan goalkeeper
James Weinberg, who would make a total of nine saves in the match to notch his seventh shutout of the year.
Montclair State, which outshot the Profs, 17-13, put the pressure on Weinberg in the final two minutes, but the Rowan keeper made one save and then saw an MSU shot hit the crossbar.
"We came out to play tonight. We knew it would take a great defensive effort and that's what we gave," said head coach
Scott Baker. "James (Weinberg) played like an All-American in net. Leo (Montesinos) proved he can dominate on both sides of the ball. The whole team competed at a high level and I am very proud of them!"
It will mark the third championship appearance for the Profs in the past four years of their participation, while Rowan will seek its first conference title since 2003.
