GLASSBORO, NJ – Christopher Newport scored with 12 minutes to play to earn a 1-0 win over Rowan in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, held at the Rowan Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Profs end their season at 13-4-2, while having made the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and for the 29
th time in the history of the program.
Tanner Dail scored the gamewinner for Christopher Newport (12-4-2) at 78:02 as Owen Burnett sent a long cross into the box, which was headed by Will Collins to Dail, who headed it in himself from close range.
The hard-fought match was close in every way, with Rowan holding a slight 8-7 edge in shots.But CNU played a man-up for the final 23 minutes after a red card was issued to the Profs'
Leo Montesinos.
Jay Vandermark had one of the Profs' best chances in the first half, but CNU goalkeeper Gabe Barros pushed it over the crossbar.
James Weinberg went without a save in the game as CNU managed just one shot on goal.
The one-goal contest was the norm for Rowan this year as the Profs had 13 matches of 19 matches this season decided by a one-goal margin.
CNU now advances to play Washington and Lee next weekend in the Third Round.
