GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan men's soccer team used second-half goals by
Jay Vandermark and
Turlough Gartlan to defeat Mount Saint Vincent, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Rowan Soccer Complex. The Profs (13-3-2) now advance to meet Christopher Newport in Sunday's Second Round at 3 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Rowan played the majority of the second half with a man advantage as CMSV's Alejandro Rodriguez received consecutive yellow cards just one minute into the half.
The Profs capitalized on the advantage at 68:46 when
Chad Yates sent a long ball in from the left wing and Vandermark touched it into the goal for his fourth goal of the year, and the third gamewinner.
Gartlan added an insurance goal when he headed in a corner kick from Yates at 72:34 for his second tally of the year.
Rowan held a 6-1 edge in shots, and goalkeeper
James Weinberg made one stop to record his ninth shutout.
"It feels great. Unfortunately we did lose in the (NJAC) final, but that felt a little more like a tie than losing the conference, and that game helped build momentum into today. So obviously to get the win and not have to go to overtime and pk's, it felt great. These guys are great but we sometimes might not be playing our best. But if you wake them, and I think the (yellow) cards helped do that for us, and that led to our favor for sure," said Rowan head coach
Scott Baker.
It was tied as the second largest winning margin for Rowan this year, as the Profs have won 10 games by only one goal.
Christopher Newport defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 3-0, to advance to the Second Round.
