MECHANICSBURG, PA -
Hafeez Melvin scored 19 points and
Andrew Seager added 18 as the Rowan men's basketball team defeated host team Messiah, 111-89, at the Towneplace Suites Tip-Off, giving the Profs a 2-0 start to the year.
Melvin was named the MVP of the tournament while Seager was chosen to the All-Tournament Team.
Rowan scored 111 points for the second game in a row, as the Profs opened the season with a 111-83 win over Coast Guard in the tournament's first game on Friday night.
Seager shot 7-for-12 from the field and
Connor Dickerson had 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting.
Marcellus Ross scored 16 points off the bench and
Arian Azemi had 13, with
Ryan O'Leary adding 11 to put six Profs in double figures.
The Profs shot 46.4 percent from the field and made 10-of-26 from three-point range
Rowan was ahead, 23-9, in the first half, but Messiah (1-1) went on a 21-2 run over three minutes to take a 30-27 lead. The teams traded leads but Rowan scored the final eight points of the half to head into intermission with a 57-48 advantage.
Rowan stayed in control the rest of the way, although Messiah cut the Prof lead to 66-62 at 15:23. A 14-6 run, that featured eight points from
Arian Azemi, gave Rowan at 97-78 lead with 4:26 to play.
Rowan will open the home schedule on Wednesday, November 17 when the Profs host Marymount at 6 p.m. in Esby Gym
