Football Drops 24-7 Decision to #13 Salisbury in Return to Wackar Stadium

GLASSBORO, NJ – A pair of second-half touchdowns helped #13/16 Salisbury pull away from Rowan, 24-7, in an NJAC football matchup today at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium, in the Profs' first game at home since September 11.

Rowan (0-5; 0-2 NJAC) pulled within 10-7 in the third quarter when James Fara lept over the pile at the goal line on fourth-and-one for his second touchdown of the year, capping a drive that started at the Salisbury 30. Greg Harris had a 15-yard gain to the get the Profs to the nine-yard line.

Salisbury (4-1; 2-0) scored on its next possession, as Shamar Gray ran it in from nine yards out with 4:50 left in the quarter to put the Sea Gulls up 17-7.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Rowan QB Mike Husni hooked up with TE CJ Barrett for a four-yard completion that put the Profs in striking distance at the 28-yard line. But Rowan's fourth-down conversion attempt failed and Salisbury got the ball back.

Rowan's defense, which had been solid the whole game, stuffed Salisbury's Chad Gleason on a fourth-and-five, with the tackles by Mike Mascioli and Calvin Harper.

The Profs took over with 6:21 to play and after a 24-yard reception by Barrett, they went backwards thanks to a holding penalty. On fourth-and-19, Husni connected with Terry Carlstrom but he was five yards shy of the marker.

Salisbury capitalized, as Joey Bildstein had a 40-yard gain in the drive and then eventually carried it in from a yard out to put the game away, 24-7. The Sea Gulls' ran for a total of 358 yards with their triple-option offense.

Rowan's defense stopped Salisbury on its first drive, as AJ Akins sacked QB Jack Lanham on fourth down at the Profs' 26, and held the Sea Gulls scoreless in the first quarter. Salisbury scored in the second quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Bert Schrecongost and a 33-yard reception by Hunter Cleaver.

Fara had 17 carries for 52 yards and one touchdown while John Maldonado had four catches for 37 yards. Husni was 9-for-17 passing for 105 yards. Akins and Mascioli led the Profs with 10 tackles apiece, while Akins forced a fumble and Eric Matos had the recovery.

Rowan will look to rebound at home next Saturday, October 23, when it hosts William Paterson for "Homecoming" with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
