Softball Wins First Game 8-0 and Ties 2-2 In Second Against New Paltz

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won the first game, 8-0 in six innings against New Paltz in the home opener and the second ended in a 2-2 tie after five innings.
 
Right-hander Lauren Shannon pitched the shutout.  She only allowed one hit and struck out eight batters.  Second baseman Sonia Sharma contributed with two hits (four at bats), a double, two RBIs and two runs.  Right fielder Jesse DeDomenico was three for four at the plate and scored two runs. 
 
Left fielder Morgan Zane and first baseman Mackenzie Short each chipped in with one hit and two RBIs.  Shortstop Alexa Saccomanno had two hits and crossed the plate one time.  Designated player Kelly Duffy added two hits, one RBI and one run.
 
The Profs (3-2-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two runs in the first inning and three in the second.  In the first, Zane drove in Sharma with a single to center field and Duffy came home on an error.  Sharma doubled in Saccomanno and DeDomenico in the second.  Duffy singled, scoring Sharma.
 
Rowan tacked on one run in the third, fifth and sixth innings.  Short had a RBI single in the third and a sac fly in the fifth. Zane scored the game ending run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
 
In the nightcap, New Paltz (0-1-1) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a RBI double by right fielder Ashley Puig.  The Profs went ahead with two runs in the bottom half.  Zane's sac fly scored DeDomenico who reached base with a walk.  Third baseman Korie Hauge knocked in Duffy with a single to right field.
 
The Hawks tied the score in the fourth.  Second baseman Madison Maggs got on base due to an error and later scored on one.  Righty Emily Fox was New Paltz's starting pitcher.  She gave up two hits in five innings and had three strikeouts.  The umpires called the game at the end of five innings.
