CARY, NC – The Rowan University softball team went 1-1 on the second day at the Grand Slam Classic. The Profs had a 7-0 loss to Christopher Newport University and they defeated North Carolina Wesleyan College, 4-3 in eight innings.
Third baseman
Korie Hague singled in the winning run against NC Wesleyan (4-3). She drove in second baseman
Sonia Sharma who started on second because of the international tie-breaker rule. Sharma went to third on right fielder
Kelly Duffy's sacrifice bunt. Rowan is 2-2 on the season.
Hague ended the game with two hits and two RBIs. Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico was the winning pitcher. She (2-0) struck out six batters. At the plate, DeDomenico had one hit and scored two runs. Left fielder
Morgan Zane contributed with one hit and one run while Duffy chipped in with one hit and one RBI.
The Profs had a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Duffy registered a sac fly that scored DeDomenico. The Battling Bishops tied the score in the third. Rowan went up 3-1 after one run in the fourth and fifth innings. Hauge's double in the fourth scored Zane. In the fifth, Duffy sent home DeDomenico with a double.
NC Wesleyan came back and tied the score after one run in the sixth and seventh. Catcher Kayla Molivas drove in the tying run in the seventh with a single.
Christopher Newport is undefeated with a 9-0 record. Designated player Patty Maye Ohanian led the Captains with two hits, four RBIs and two runs. She recorded a grand slam in the fifth inning. First baseman Kaitlyn Hasty hit a three-run homer in the sixth.
Hauge produced two hits in two at bats. Catcher
Cali Kraemer, DeDomenico and Sharma had one hit apiece.
