Softball Splits Games On Opening Day

CARY, NC– The Rowan University softball team split games on the first day of the 2020 season.  The Profs had a 5-1 loss against Piedmont College and came back to defeat McDaniel College, 11-1 in five innings at the Grand Slam Classic.
 
Jesse DeDomenico was the winning pitcher versus McDaniel.  She struck out six batters and only gave up three hits.  She also had two hits in two at bats, three runs and a home run.  
 
First baseman Mackenzie Short recorded a grand slam. Third baseman Korie Hauge drove in two runs with two hits and scored two runs.  Center fielder Rebecca Lombardo and right fielder Kelly Duffy each chipped in with two hits while left fielder Morgan Zane scored two runs.
 
The Profs totaled 12 hits and the game ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.  Right fielder Kelly Duffy knocked in DeDomenic with a single in the first.  McDaniel tied the score in the third and Rowan went ahead 5-1 in the bottom half.  DeDomenico and center fielder Rebecca Lombardo came home on Hauge's hit.  Catcher Cali Kraemer doubled home Zane and Hauge.  
 
Rowan tacked on six more runs in the fourth.  Domenico led off with a homer and Zane stole home. With two outs and the bases loaded, Short smashed the first home run of her career.
 
In the first game, Piedmont tied the score at one in the bottom of the first inning.  Duffy hit a single to left field, scoring DeDomenico who reached base with a hit.  The Lions went on to score one run in the fourth and fifth innings and two in the sixth.  
 
First baseman Micaela Quesada had two RBIs with one hit and one run. Center fielder Rebekah Stegmayer produced two hits and two runs.  Catcher Hannah Morgan added two hits, one RBI and one run.
