CAMDEN, NJ – Rutgers-Camden took its final lead with 1:08 to play and the Scarlet Raptors held on for a 90-87 win over Rowan in NJAC men's basketball action.
Maliq Sanders scored 22 points for Rowan (8-9; 4-6 NJAC) in the loss.
After Rowan's
Matt Green tied the game, 86-86, with a free throw at 1:18, Rutgers' Arian Azemi converted a layup at 1:08 to push the home team ahead, 88-86.
Ryan O'Leary hit another free throw for the Profs, but two more Rutgers' foul shots iced the win. Rowan had one more possession and inbounded under its own basket with 6.9 seconds left, but Sanders' shot was off the mark.
The teams traded leads throughout the second half, especially in the final 10 minutes. Rowan fought back from a 64-59 deficit to take a 65-64 lead at 10:04 and from there, neither team led by more than three points.
Rowan's last advantage of the game came with 2:06 to play on a layup by
Jerry Price.
Jake Petrik pushed Rutgers-Camden back in front with a pair of free throws at 1:18 and then the home team took the final lead just 10 seconds later.
Austin Kearney 15 points and a career-high four blocks for Rowan and
Diante Bah scored 12 points on a perfect shooting night as he went 6-for-6. Price added 12 points and Green had 10 points and five assists.
In the first half, Rowan led the whole way and opened up an 11-point lead, 41-30, with six minutes to play after back-to-back threes from
Brian Thatcher and
Matt Green. The Scarlet Raptors closed out the half on a 14-5 run to cut Rowan's advantage to 46-44 at intermission despite the Profs shooting 52.9 percent from the field.
Petrik led Rutgers-Camden (6-10; 3-7) with 24 points, including five three-pointers, with Isaac Destin scoring 23.
The Profs are back on the road on Saturday when they travel to New Jersey City for a game that will now start at 2 p.m. (instead of 3 p.m.).
