CHICAGO, IL - Freshman
Jay Vandermark scored two goals to help the Rowan University men's soccer team record a 3-1 upset of 10th-ranked North Park University on Sunday afternoon. The Profs (4-1-1) now own an unbeaten 2-0-1 record against Top 15 teams this season.
Â
Vandermark opened the scoring just six minutes in as he took a pass from classmate
Wilby Alfred for the score. Sophomore
Stephen Mecke tallied his first of the season to put the Profs up 2-0, as freshman
Leo Montesinos assisted on the goal at 39:10.
Â
North Park (3-2) got on the board late in the contest as Peder Olson scored the Vikings' lone goal at 82:10.
Â
Vandermark iced the game for the Profs with his seventh goal of the season just 42 seconds later, which was unassisted.
Â
North Park held a slight 14-13 edge in shots but sophomore
James Weinberg made four saves in goal for Rowan.
Â
"The team has a lot to learn about the discipline it will take to win big games at the end of the season. With that said, this trip showed we have the talent to play with some of the best teams in the country," said head coach
Scott Baker. "We are happy with the weekend but also focused on becoming a better team and building as the season continues.
Â
Rowan also tied #7 University of Chicago, 1-1, on this two-game trip. The Profs return to action locally on Wednesday when they visit Haverford College.
