GLASSBORO, NJ A pair of touchdowns within a three-minute span in the third quarter helped give 12th-ranked Linfield College a 35-14 win over host Rowan University in football action at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.
Â
Rowan trailed 28-14 and was putting together a five-minute drive in the fourth quarter, but Linfield's Tyler Bergeron came up with an interception in the end zone to stop the Profs. It was the third interception of the Profs, and their fourth turnover of the game.
Â
The Wildcats then put it out of reach after recovering a Rowan fumble and scoring in three plays with an 11-yard TD reception by Keegan Weiss with 2:20 to play. Â
Â
Linfield jumped out to a 14-0 lead but All-American
Elijah Rehm scored his first touchdown of the season when he took a 2-yard pass from
Mike Husni to cut Linfield's lead to 14-7 as time expired in the first half.
Â
The Profs then tied it in the third quarter, 14-14, with a drive that included a 21-yard completion to
Nick Grosso and a 16-yarder to Rehm. It culminated on a 30-yard touchdown run by
Messiah Divine for his first of the season.
Â
Linfield answered immediately on the next drive with an 11-yard pass caught by Jacob Calo to go up 21-14. The Wildcats then capitalized on the Profs' four-and-out on the next possession, driving 60 yards in four plays to go up 28-14, with a 48-yard pass play from Joseph Smith to Keaton Wood.
Â
"We left points on the board in the first half. We could've been ahead in the second half but the turnovers occur and then it starts to snowball. We just didn't play well enough. Against a nationally-ranked team like Linfield, you can't do that. You have to play the whole game and when you're down in the red zone, you've got to get points," said Profs' coach
Jay Accorsi
