Men's Soccer Defeats Carthage, 4-3 In Overtime

GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Jay Vandermark scored the winning goal in overtime for the Rowan University men's soccer team against Carthage College, 4-3. It was the Profs' second game of the Gilmore Alumni Classic.
 
Vandermark (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/Delran) recorded the game-winner at 4:57 into the first extra period.  He hit the lower left side of the net after a short pass from forward Chad Yates (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.).  It was Vandermark's fourth goal on the season.
 
In the second half, Carthage went ahead 2-1 at 46:02 on a goal by midfielder/forward Ivan Esquivel (sr. Waukegan, IL/Warren Twp.). Forward/midfielder Leonardo Mendoza (sr. Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) and midfielder/forward Freddy Martinez (sr. Carpentersville, IL/Dundee Crown) assisted on the goal.  Rowan followed with several shots then midfielder Michael Ferrara (fr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) tied the score (61:52) with a corner kick. 
 
Midfielder Declan Riddell (fr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) gave the Profs a 3-2 lead at 79:16. He headed in a cross from midfielder Mohamed Elgayar (jr. Port Said, Egypt/Northeast (PA)).  Carthage answered 18 seconds later.  Martinez finished with a bicycle kick after passes from Mendoza and back/midfielder Kevin Reilly (jr. Libertyville, IL/Libertyville).   
 
Rowan ended the game with 20 total shots while Carthage took nine. Goalkeeper James Weinberg (jr. Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) registered the win.  Goalies Christian Lekki (fr. Medinah, IL/Lake Park) and Steven Owens (jr. St. Charles, IL/Thomas Kelly) shared The Red Men's goalie duties. Lekki stopped five shots in 70 minutes while Owens played the remainder of the game and made one save.  
 
The Profs got on the scoreboard at 20:18.  Vandermark headed in a free kick from the left side by Elgayar. Forward Jerry Patino (sr. Oak Lawn, IL/Harold L. Richards) tied the score (39:15) with a penalty kick when Rowan was called for a handball.  Patino hit the left side of the net.  The Profs took nine shots in the first half and The Red Men had three.
