COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The Rowan University field hockey team opened the 2019 season with a 5-4 win in two overtimes at Ursinus College on Friday.

Liz Fox (so. Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) scored the game-winner at 75:24. She tapped in a pass from forward
Bridget Guinan (so. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts). The Profs trailed 4-3 then midfielder
Kristiina Castagnola (so. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) knotted the score with an unassisted tally (47:48). She ended the game with two goals while Guinan had one goal and one assist.
The Profs are ranked third in the nation and were selected to finish first in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Coaches Poll. Forward
Krystyna Hovell (so. Gibbsboro, NJ/Eastern Reg.) contributed with one goal and midfielder/back
Rachel Stone (fr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) added an assist. Goalie
Morgan Novak (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) stopped 16 shots.
For the Bears, midfielder/forward Gabriela Howell (jr. Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) totaled a goal and an assist. Midfielders Erin Saybolt (sr. Sounderton, PA/Souderton Area), Jamie Mayer (so. Huntington Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) and Devon Carroll (jr. Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood Area) each found the cage one time. Midfielders Anna Hall (sr. Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks W.) and Brianne Nicholas (sr. Villas, NJ/Lower Cape May Reg.) and forward Gemma Dufoe (sr. Malvern, PA/West Chester E.) all registered one assist. Goalie Addie Frey (jr. Collegeville, PA/Methacton) made 17 saves.
The score was tied 2-2 at the half. Both teams produced one goal in each quarter. Carroll started the scoring at 11:08 for a 1-0 Ursinus advantage. Castagnola (13:22) and Hovell (16:34) put the Profs ahead 2-1. Saybolt knocked in a feed (20:09), which evened the score. Ursinus led 4-3 after the third period. Guinan and Howell exchanged goals then Mayer put the Bears up at 35:05.
