Softball Sweeps New Jersey City, 8-0 And 13-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept New Jersey City University, 8-0 and 13-0 in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.  Both games were five innings because of the eight-run rule.
 
Right-hander Lauren Shannon (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) only allowed two hits and struck out 13 batters in the opener.  She is 8-2 on the season.  Righty Christina Mezey (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Saint Dominic Academy) had the loss on the mound.
 
Left fielder Morgan Zane (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) was three for three with a double and two runs.  Second baseman Sonia Sharma (so. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) contributed with two hits, one RBI and two runs.  Catcher Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) chipped in with a hit, one RBI and one run.  
 
The Profs got on the scoreboard in the third inning when shortstop Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) stole home. Rowan had four runs in the fourth. Designated player Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) led off with a double to left field.  She was replaced by pinch runner Alessandra Rodriguez (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) who later scored on a wild pitch.  Sharma drove in Zane with a single.  Anderson reached base on an error and Sharma came home. Anderson attempted to steal second and because of an error, right fielder Rebecca Lombardo (so. New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) scored. 
 
Rowan added three more runs in the fifth.  With two outs, Zane hit a double to left center field and touched home plate on a single by Guarino.  Lombardo got to first on an error, scoring Guarino and Sharma.
 
Right-hander Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) was the winning pitcher in the nightcap.  She (8-4) threw three innings and gave up just two hits.  At the plate, DeDomenico had two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.  Alexa Saccomanno (fr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and Emily August (so. Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) each pitched one inning.  Mezey suffered the loss again for the Gothic Knights.  
 
Rowan has an 18-6 record and is undefeated in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a 6-0 mark.  New Jersey City is 4-20 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
 
Anderson totaled two hits, a double, two RBIs and three runs.  Zane collected three hits, one RBI and two runs.  Saccomanno produced three hits, a triple, one RBI and two runs.  Sharma posted two hits, a triple, one RBI and two runs.  Lombardo added two hits, one RBI and one run.  Guarino had two RBIs while Duffy tallied two hits.

Third baseman Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Anderson scored. Rowan led 6-0 after the second inning. Sharma started the frame with a triple to left field.  Saccomanno followed with a triple to right field, scoring Sharma.  DeDomenico recorded a two-RBI double and Zane singled in a run. Zane crossed home plate on an error.
 
Rowan scored seven more runs in the third.  Anderson knocked in two runs with a double to left center. DeDomenico hit a double to left and scored Anderson.  Guarino drove in two runs with a single to center field. Sharma and Lombardo each had RBI singles.  
 
Next week, Rowan hosts Stockton University on Tuesday, April 9 in a conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
