MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Montclair State University on Saturday. The Profs won, 18-3 and lost to the Red Hawks, 7-1.
The Brown and Gold is 28-8 overall and has a 13-4 conference record. Right fielder
Eric Schorr (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) totaled six hits in the first game. He also added two runs batted in (RBI) and two scores. Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and catcher
Steven Hewa (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) contributed four hits apiece. Walker scored three runs, while Hewa crossed home five times and had three doubles. Third baseman
Nick Schooley (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) produced three RBIs.
Right-hander
Justin Smith (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) was the winning pitcher (3-1). He threw six innings and struck out seven batters. Right-hander
Zach Listro (jr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) tossed two frames and fanned two batters, while lefty
Shane Kubrak (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Paul IV) hurled the ninth and struck out two. Righty Mike Cannavo (so. Wurtsboro, NY/Monticello) suffered the loss (1-3), pitching four innings and giving up 11 hits and six runs.
The Profs went ahead in the third, 1-0 when second baseman
Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) singled through the left side and brought in Walker. Rowan doubled its lead in the fourth as Schorr singled to left field and scored Hewa.
The Brown and Gold added six runs in the fifth to pull away, 8-0. First baseman
Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) scored Walker with a single to center field, followed by a RBI double down the left field line by Kokos. Hewa drove in Kokos when he had a double to right field. Two runs were knocked in on a Schooley double to right center and a Walker added another run with a RBI single to second base.
The scoring spree continued for Rowan as it plated three runs in the sixth and seventh innings and four in the eighth to win.
Montclair State (12-24, NJAC 3-14) won game two against the Profs. Righty Matt Pickus (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) earned the win (2-0). He pitched seven innings and allowed five hits and one run. Third baseman Brad Edwards (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) contributed three hits and scored twice. Second baseman Joe Norton (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) posted two hits and two runs.
Right-hander
Dan Corvo (so. River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) suffered the loss. (2-1), tossing 4.2 innings and striking out five. Designated hitter
Michael Manganella (so. West Milford, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) registered two hits, while center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.), Kokos and Walker each had one hit.
The Red Hawks led, 2-0 in the third inning. Montclair State scored a run in the first and third innings on Rowan errors. The Profs cut the margin to 2-1 in the fourth when Walker scored on a passed ball. The Brown and Gold slipped for the remainder of the game as Montclair State added five runs for the win.
The baseball team travels to Stockton University for its final game of the regular season on Sunday, April 28 at 3 p.m.
